Over 80 Muslims gathered in East London on Saturday 14th October to attend an emergency meeting on the veil convened Hizb-ut-Tahrir. The event was organised in the light of the recent statement made by Jack Straw, the Leader of the House of Commons that the veil(niqab) was a ‘visible statement of separation and difference’.
The speakers argued that the statement was merely a continuation of the government’s policy of vilification of the Muslim community to detract from the disasters of its foreign policy in Iraq and Afghanistan. The speakers added that Muslims in Britain needed to redouble their efforts in engaging with the wider society to explain our concerns and our deen in order to counter the current negative picture of UK Muslims painted by the government and the media.
Speakers included Taji Mustafa, Media Representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain.
