British government 'in denial' over Iraqi prisoner abuses Print E-mail
Western Intervention
Wednesday, 01 July 2009
The government tonight was accused of responding to evidence of the torture and mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners with "denial and obfuscation".

The indictment of policy was made by Prof William Schabas, who said it raised "troubling questions of a military and intelligence culture that ... fostered an inbred culture of abuse". Schabas, director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, was giving the inaugural Baham Mousa lecture. Mousa, a hotel receptionist, died in the custody of British soldiers in Basra in May 2003. A public inquiry into his death is due to open later this month.
