London, UK, October 10th 2008 – Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain today held a press conference to launch campaign in response to the publication of the controversial book the Jewel of Medina by Sherry Jones. The book has been described by a US academic who reviewed it as making “fun of Muslims and their history" and that it took “sacred history” and turned it into “softcore pornography”. She went on to say that “there is a long history of anti-Islamic polemic that uses sex and violence to attack the Prophet and his faith. This novel follows in that oft-trodden path." Having read extracts, we cannot but agree with her.

Dr Nazreen Nawaz and Taji Mustafa addressed the gathered media.

Taji Mustafa, a media representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain, said at the launch, "There is huge pressure on Muslims in the west to remain silent over these insults. How can we? Did Abu Said Al-Khudri (ra) not report that our beloved Prophet (saw) say "Whoever amongst you sees [a munkar] anything objectionable, let him change it with his hand, if he is not able, then with his tongue, and if he is not even able to do so, then with his heart, and the latter is the weakest form of faith." [Muslim]

“Do we not speak out when someone insults our wives or mothers? Are insults on the noble Prophet and his family not a greater munkar? How can any Muslim be silent over this issue!”
“We cannot and must not be silent. Speaking in defence of our Prophet (saw) is an obligation upon us and there is a lot we can do, the least of which is to condemn the publication of this book.”

“This is why Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain has launched a campaign to make Muslims aware of the issue and to campaign against the publication, distribution and stocking of this disgusting book.”

“Inshah Allah, our campaign involves

1) Nationwide distribution of thousands of flyers after jumuah prayers today
2) Public talks in local areas to highlight how Muslims can respond to this latest propaganda onslaught
3) Delegations to meet Imams, Muslim groups and influential Muslims
4) Emails and letters to publishers and bookshops
5) A petition
6) Letters to Muslim embassies

“We will consider other forms of protest that may be necessary as the campaign progresses. We ask Allah (swt) to strengthen and unite our community in responding to these attacks.”

Media outlets that attended included GEO TV, Press TV, IHA NEws agency, Venus TV, News 1 and Wase TV
