obama-iraq-leaders.jpgYesterday, Iraqi leaders and US president Barack Obama proclaimed that Iraq was now truly sovereign as they marked the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq’s cities to bases within Iraq.

Iraq's Prime Minister, Nouri Al-Maliki, declared Tuesday "National Sovereignty Day" and ordered a public holiday. This charade ignores the fact that 130,000 US troops on Iraqi soil still amounts to an occupation or that the current political process in Iraq was put in place by the foreign occupiers in order to guarantee a local leadership that secures western interests. It also plays down the fact that these US troops can be deployed back to cities at anytime provided the Iraqi leadership requests it.

In truth, while Obama escalates the brutal war in Afghanistan, he was bound to proclaim this latest development as a sign of his scaling down in Iraq and withdrawing from the streets also leaves US troops less open to attacks and minimises the image of dead soldiers returning from an increasingly unpopular war.

The US and UK lead occupation has left a disastrous legacy: 4 million displaced Iraqi’s, up to 500,000 killed, torture and murder at Abu Ghraib, the Falluja massacre, rape and murder at Haditha, death of Baha Mousa and many other atrocities yet their claim to uphold ‘human rights’! The occupation also fanned a sectarian conflict where there previously was none. In most cases, the occupiers ‘got away with murder’, replacing Saddam’s tyranny with their own. Only when all foreign troops depart Iraq can it really start to address its problems.

With the collusion of Muslim rulers, the US and UK now maintain huge bases in Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and many other Muslim countries. The invasion of Iraq shows that western governments no longer believe that their client rulers in the Muslim countries are able to stem the growing Islamic revival, so they have reverted to a more direct colonisation and military intervention in the Muslim world in an attempt at thwarting the unstoppable demands for Islamic governance, the Khilafah state. However, they lie to their people claiming their invasion is about ‘fighting terrorism’, a search for weapons of mass destruction or the spread of ‘freedom’!

The return of the Islamic Khilafah state in the Muslim world will put an end to the West’s economic exploitation, political interference and military occupation of the Muslim world replacing it with a truly independent and sovereign government that implements Islam, looks after its citizens and offers a different vision to the exploitation of global capitalism.
