Reaction to Archbishop's Sharia-speech highlights ignorance about sharia Print E-mail
Issues Explained
Sunday, 10 February 2008
The media hysteria filled with venom and hatred towards the Islamic Sharia following the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams' now infamous speech can only leave an impartial observer concluding that Britain is rapidly sliding into a dangerous state of irrational, anti-Islamic hysteria.

Both rightwing broadsheets and tabloids joined forces with politicians, religious leaders and commentators to cast a barrage of criticism towards the Archbishop for his comments stating the advent of some aspects of Sharia was inevitable in the UK legal system.

Even though the Archbishop's comments were in reference to the growing use of Sharia councils across the UK in Muslim populated areas such as East London that deal with community issues such marital disputes and inheritance, the notion that such councils should hold any level of legal jurisdiction was seized upon by the Prime Minister Gordon Brown, among others, to quickly reassert the superiority of secular common law over the Sharia by stating that British law had to reflect British values.

Muslims are well aware that the Archbishop's comments have been misrepresented and blown out of all proportion as they understand that the Sharia of Allah (swt) goes far beyond the simple settling of marital disputes and family problems and therefore in the context discussed do not constitute a parallel system of law or indeed the application of Sharia in the UK. Muslims living in the west and in the Muslim lands understand that as a way of life, Islam's legal code encompasses every area of personal and societal life including economic, ethical and judicial spheres. Muslims are also aware that the Sharia is a system that seeks to deliver divine justice for all people and not simply for Muslims. This is why the vast majority of Muslims in Britain have focussed the call for the return of political Islam and the implementation of the Sharia under the shade of the Khilafah exclusively at the Muslim world and not at the west.

What is also plain for Muslims to see is the blatant and blind hypocrisy of western politicians such as Gordon Brown and David Cameron who talk about British law reflecting British values while they support the imposition of western legal and political systems in Muslims countries by the barrel of a gun! The west invades Muslims countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq for regime change and imposes secular democratic constitutions that have a façade of Sharia. In addition, they also support dictators and despots who imprison and torture those that call peacefully for the comprehensive implementation of the Sharia.

But the hypocrisy doesn't end there as western politicians have the audacity to state that the west will never allow Muslims to establish Sharia and Khilafah in their own lands. In 2006, the then Home Secretary Charles Clarke stated in a speech he made while visiting the US "...there can be no negotiation about the re-creation of the Caliphate; there can be no negotiation about the imposition of Sharia Law; there can be no negotiation about the suppression of equality of the sexes; there can be no negotiation about the ending of free speech. These values are fundamental to our civilisation and are simply not up for negotiation." George Bush and Tony Blair have made similar statements. If British laws need to reflect British values, then do not the laws and systems of society in the Muslim world need to reflect the Islamic values held by the vast majority of the people?

These critics of the Sharia law are also unable to correlate the declining situation of our society, characterised by numerous social ills such as spiralling violence, materialism, debt, and alcoholism with the secular values they claim to be so superior to the Sharia. The growing intolerance towards Islam and Sharia in the UK is dangerous and is symptomatic of a deep ignorance of Islam and the black propaganda campaign against it that is an integral part of the global war on terror.

Hizb ut Tahrir Britain challenges the authors of this campaign to put an end to the politics of Islam-baiting and to engage in a genuine debate about the values and systems of Islam versus those of secularism. Hizb ut Tahrir Britain calls upon the Muslim community to join and support it in working to dispel the myths about Islam, the Sharia and the Khilafah through dialogue and discussion with the wider society.

astonished: benefits ... huh
well, thats an interesting debate so far, i am not living in the west and i dont intend to, because my western friends living here with me tell me about the cost they have to pay for getting those so-called "benefits". Here in the middle east everything is OK so far until the western war mongers come and destroy what we have now. I have sympathy for the people living in the west, trying to maintain their religious values whether catholics or orthodox or muzlimz.

Lou Stouch: Get your story straight
On the one hand, you say you have no intent to implement shariah in the west. On the other hand, you point out all the problems in western society and how shariah would rectify them. Understand please - we like things just as they are here in the west. We dont want your shariah, with laws on how to defecate and everything else under the sun. As said above, if you dont like it here, please take advantage of that other western freedom - the right to leave. Oh, thats right, that would require giving up all those welfare benefits now wouldnt it? And if I am not mistaken, extra benefits for those extra wives.

Paul: Mr
What you fail to see is, you wish to follow your faith and ways in the western world, but all you do is complain how it is and how you want to change it. When in Rome do as the Romans do or find somewhere else. Simple, don't like the western world move back east. Oh no where would the benifits of the western world come from then!!!!

Irfan Bhatti: Debate? ... Also, where can Muslims go?
Regarding debate, this is just a style used to discuss ideas in an open atmosphere where people can hear both sides of the argument and then judge for themselves. We saw this in many exmaples at the time of the Prophet(saw) where he would go into the Market places and deliver Islam and challenge the current way of life and beliefs. We saw the Companions(ra) do the same. Ali(ra) was noted for his wisdom in debate. We then saw that the great scholars of the past also used this same style such as Imam Abu Hanifah etc.

In today's situation we need to do the same. We need to debate Islam and Secularism/Democracy. Its not for the sake of it but it is because the western governments are trying to force their secular values down our throats. This can be seen when you look at the Muslim countries. One of their arguments is that Islam is barbaric and secular democracy is the saviour. Therefore, this idea needs to be discussed.

As regards where to implement Shariah, the Muslims do want to be governed by it but it is in the Muslim lands where they want it as regards a system, the Caliphate. At the moment, no country implements the Shariah comprehensively all they do is implement a few punishments and even then they don't implement them properly. Also, the Western governments especially Britain and America don't allow the Muslims to do so. That's why the Muslims can't go to any Muslim countries presently.

this is another occasion where we can see the venom that is so deeply rooted within the western system towards Islam and its values and how threatning it is to their way of life ..it is one rule for themselves and another for any one else so where is the democracy there? smilies/angry.gif

Nadeem: Shariah courts and Beth Din......
Courts of arbitration over marriage/divorce and financial matters have legal status for the Jews and have been for over 100 yrs, so why not for the muslims and any other religion if required? is not fairness a British value Mr Brown? let alone a universal one.

"Yet, the secular political elite in the UK is also unable to correlate the declining situation of our society, characterised by spiralling violence, materialism, debt, and alcoholism with the secular values they claim to be so superior to the Sharia."

There is plenty of violence in the Middle East and the East. This is not unique to, or even most common in, the West.

I agree that there is a strong case to be made for better restrictions on alcohol. However there is no evidence whatsoever that religion needs to come into it in any way. I know plenty of secular British people who do not touch alcohol - and also a few 'religious' ones who do.

I agree that huge sections of the press have a disgusting attitude towards Islam and jump on stories like this to scare people and make money out of Islamophobia. However a lot of ordinary people are annoyed by the suggestion that certain groups of people should have one set of laws and certain groups of people should have another set of laws. The point of a liberal democracy is that the same laws apply to everybody. If people want to govern themselves via sharia law they can always choose to live in a country where sharia law applies.
