What is the 'ideology of evil' that Blair wishes to uproot? Print E-mail
Thursday, 14 July 2005
Tony Blair yesterday launched a campaign to call upon some Muslims in Britain to confront the "perverted and poisonous" doctrines of Islamic extremism in their midst.

He said he needed to "pull up this evil ideology by its roots".

It would be wrong to think that Blair and his supporters are referring to people who endorse actions like the London bombings. Certainly he does mean to target anyone who did condone this act, but as Muslims are well aware, this is number of people is negligible in number. Muslims have repeated that Islam does not allow killing innocents, and no Muslims have been reported as saying this was a justifiable action. So who exactly is Mr. Blair targeting, if it is not only a matter of these bombings, and what exactly is the evil ideology?

He is referring to certain Islamic ideas, that you will hear heavily scrutinised and criticised by politicians, think tanks and the media.
These are:

  • The fact that Islam commands a response of fighting Jihad in a land that has been attacked and occupied. It is this 'religious' conviction of resistance to occupation that prevents invading powers from securing their occupation. That is why they view this as a problem. It is for this reason the subjects of legitimate resistance, 'suicide bombing', and the London bombing are interchanged with each other.

  • The fact that the Islam defines that when Muslim land is attacked and occupied, the response is to fight Jihad in that land. This is a problem for them because they wish to colonise Muslim lands and secure occupation if people have a 'religious' conviction they have to resist. It is for this reason the subjects of legitimate resistance, 'suicide bombing', and the London bombing are interchanged with each other.

  • The fact that Muslims see themselves as part of a global Ummah is disliked, because it is perceived we feel the pain here for Muslims the world over, and that means a group of people constantly reminding them of their foreign policy.

  • The fact that Islam sees no difference in personal life and political life, and should be applied on an individual, community, state and global level is a threat. This is because it contradicts the secular values that dominate this country, and indeed the world. It is a sobering thought that the century that was dominated globally by secular states was the bloodiest in history - the 20th century.
For now Mr Blair is saying condemn extremism. Tomorrow he will tell us that it is these ideas that are extreme, and Muslims that adopt these prinicples are the extremists.
