As part of their on-going campaign "Stand for Islam" Hizb ut Tahrir Britain, an Islamic political party, held a debate entitled "Sharia Law in the balance" in Queens Road Community Centre in Walthamstow on Sunday 1st June. The debate focused on whether the increasing calls for Sharia law in the Muslim world represented a stand for justice or a retreat to backwardness

Sarendra Lal of the National Secular Society, addressed the audience by discussing how the implementation of shariah in the form of a caliphate is an unachievable goal and how secularism is the ideal form for accountable government and the rule of law.
Speaker, Sajjad Khan Chief Political Advisor, Hizb ut Tahrir, addressed points raised by Sarendra Lal and highlighted that in fact it is secularism that has caused the current ills in British society, with rampant crime, declining moral values and family breakdown.

A lively question and answer session followed the debate.

The event was open to Muslims and non-Muslims and attended by over 100 participants, men and women, representing a broad spectrum of the Waltham forest community including respected elders, students and professionals.
