Stand for Islam: Community Event
Venue: Toynbee Hall, Whitechapel, East London
Date: Tuesday 6nd May 2008
The Stand for Islam Campaign: Whitechapel, East London.
As part of the national "Stand for Islam" campaign, which has been launched in response to repeated recent attacks upon Islam across Europe, Hizb ut Tahrir Britain, an Islamic political party, held one of a series of events at Toynbee Hall in Whitechapel, East London on Tuesday the 6th May. The event titled 'Calls to Ban the Quran - How should Muslims respond' was attended by about a hundred people, including local businessmen, professionals and community leaders.
Ferdous Miah, addressed the audience by discussing how the concept of 'freedom of speech' has led to an uncivilized use of propaganda against the Quran and the religion of Islam, which is followed by over 1.6 billion people globally. He was able to demonstrate that 'freedom of speech' existed as a tool used by western politicians to achieve their own political aims.
Speaker, Kasim Khawja, addressed how the Muslim community should mobilise in response to this series of attacks on Islam and Muslims that have taken place across Europe, and how the community needs to ‘Stand for Islam’.
In the Q&A session there was lively discussion as to the practical actions individuals can undertake to ‘Stand for Islam’ and portray Islam’s message to the wider society, in particular the role Muslim women who are also under scrutiny and always stereotyped as being oppressed under Islam.
