The new year has begun with the start of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. It has been 1441 years since the Messenger of Allah (Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him) emigrated from the land of disbelief in Makkah to the Islamic State in Madinah, the land of Islam. It would be strange indeed to remember with fondness this great event and not yearn for it again, working to bring back the Khilafah on the way of Prophethood once more.
The Islamic State in Madinah and the rightly guided Khilafah (Caliphate) that followed it, showed the world a great example of justice, higher values, protection of human dignity, lives and possessions, where the wealth was distributed in a fair manner without corruption.
Unlike today, where corruption is rampant in every corner of the globe, where no one is safe from the suspicions and spying of the state, not in the east nor the west. Every day there is a new story of how a government agency or corporation is abusing technological advances to gather private information about people, then acting upon it to strip them of their basic rights, whether in China, India, America or Britain.
The Prophet recited the verses of the Qur’an to the people, and implemented its rules as their ruler. Among them came the verse:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا مِّنَ الظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ الظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا
“O you who believe avoid much suspicion as some suspicion is sin and do not spy” [Al-Hujurat 49:12]
So the Islamic State was a place where privacy was protected, people were safe from abusive state agencies, trust had value, and the people were not corrupted by invasive spying into their every affair.
The memory of such a state of justice surely makes people yearn for such a high standard and lack of corruption once again!
When poverty intensifies and global financial corruption threatens the pockets of the rich and the poor: isn’t the memory of the Prophetic State a motive for working towards a new Islamic State where money is circulated among all of the people, not only amongst the rich?
When the ravenous colonialist wolves clamour for the blood of the vulnerable Muslims all over the world, should not the example of the Prophet and rightly guided Khilafah make us work hard to take it as a model that will once again make the blood of the believer more sacred than the Kaaba and its surroundings?
Yes, this great Islamic history, with the rules that are derived from the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet, with his exemplary political activity, his just internal and foreign policy, his forbidding of evil and enjoining of good, his prevention of corruption and his distribution of wealth to those who deserve it, adherence to this example is what elevated the people before, and will raise the status of justice and dignity once again.
وَاللَّهُ غَالِبٌ عَلَىٰ أَمْرِهِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
And Allah is predominant over his affair, but most of the people do not know [Yusuf 12:21]
