Baghdad conference is another tool to further US control in the Middle East
London, UK, March 10 2007 – Though billed as a conference on restoring stability and peace in Iraq, today's Baghdad conference is just another tool to further US control in the region. Attending the conference with US and Iraqi officials are representatives from Iran, Syria and other states bordering Iraq.
Commenting on the conference, Dr Imran Waheed, media representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain, said, "Today's conference is discussing a peripheral issue – the role of Iraq's neighbours – while ignoring the main issue which is the US-led occupation which has lead to torture at Abu Ghraib, massacres in Falluja and Mahmoudiya, sectarian conflict where there was none and the death of over 650,000 Iraqis."
"This conference is less about helping Iraqis and more about new ways in which the US can maintain control of the region – enlisting the help of Iraq's neighbours – whilst placating US voters who have expressed unhappiness at the continuing cost in American lives and money. This is why the US is now prepared to talk to members of the ‘axis of evil'. It is a shame that Iraq's neighbours stood by whilst Iraq was invaded and descended into chaos but are now prepared to help the US government out of a quagmire."
"In his speech today, Nouri Al-Maliki warned other nations against interfering in the affairs of Iraq but forgot to address the US-led occupiers who continue to make all the key decisions regarding the security, military, financial and other vital matters affecting the lives of the people of Iraq."
