London, UK, August 16 2008 – Thousands of delegates attended Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain’s national Conference: Khilafah – The Need for Political Unity in London earlier today, part of a month of global activities following similar events in Palestine, Iraq, Indonesia, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Ukraine, Mombasa, Australia, Pakistan and Yemen.
The key conference message was the need for Muslims to work for a new politics of uniting the Muslim lands under a unified leadership, the Khilafah. Speakers outlined how the complex and diverse problems that exist from the Atlantic coast of Morocco to the Pacific coast of Indonesia are almost impossible to solve when viewed in isolation, or through the outmoded prism of the nation state. It is an astonishing fact that the Muslim world possesses approximately 20% of the world’s population, over 60% of the world’s oil reserves and 55% of gas reserves, approximately 37% of the world’s gold and forex reserves, and almost 25% of the world’s defence personnel. Yet in the absence of the Khilafah to harness these bountiful resources, it remains weak, divided and colonised.
