Over the last week, Pakistan has been horrified and disgusted by the brutal kidnapping, rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl named Zainab in the Punjabi city of Kasur. CCTV footage shows Zainab being led away by a man in full view without fear of detection.
The hashtag #JusticeForZainab has trended not only in Pakistan but globally too bringing the plight of this poor young victim to the world’s attention. What makes this barbaric act more horrific is that it is the 12th such case in the same city over in the last year.
The incompetence of both the Pakistani government and its police force have been lamented by protesters in Kasur, the immediate reaction of the police force was to shoot two protesters dead.
It seems that this tragic event has unified the country into saying something must be done, emotions are definitely running high. Some have called for capital punishment of the harshest nature for the criminals once they have been caught. Others have said that there needs to be the better teaching of sexual issues to Pakistani youngsters so they know the limits and one government minister has simply blamed the media for creating a hype around a crime that has led to public protests.
However, this is a time for everyone in Pakistan and around the world to reflect on what causes such devious crimes in countries across the world and not just in Pakistan.
The proliferation of liberal values, pornography and hyper-sexualisation all under the guise of democracy have created a global pandemic of sexual abuse against women and children. We cannot look at Pakistan in isolation of the abuse of youngsters from the Philippines and Vietnam, who are abused over the internet for clients across the Western world, nor the debate around sexual assaults that has gripped Hollywood over the last few months.
It is clear that when you allow liberal un-Islamic values to exist, propped up by a democratic un-Islamic system of governance, then you will have to suffer the consequences of liberalism like the Western world has been suffering for decades. Those who support democracy in Pakistan and have spent their lives propping up a system which oppresses the people for decades are as much to blame for what happened to Zainab as much as the criminals who carried out the heinous crime.
One has to remember that the leader of the free democratic world Donald Trump is a man who openly admitted sexually harassing and abusing women and was still not only deemed fit to run for office but voted in by the public.
It is about time the Muslims of Pakistan and across the world stop putting out hopes in a system which will only provide us with more Zainabs and started to put our hopes in the system of Allah (SWT) the Khilafah state.
