Women of Hizb ut-Tahrir Host Historic International Women’s Conference
On the 10th March 2012, the week of International Women’s Day, the women of Hizb ut-Tahrir will be hosting a truly historic International Women’s Conference in Tunisia entitled, “The Khilafah: A Shining Model of Women’s Rights and Political Role.” The conference will gather female political activists, writers, academics, journalists, teachers, community leaders, representatives of women’s organisations and other female opinion-makers from across the world to present a detailed vision of what the Khilafah system of governance based upon purely Islamic laws and principles would mean to the status, rights and lives of women.
Speakers will include women of Hizb ut-Tahrir from Tunisia, Jordan, Palestine, Yemen, Turkey, Libya, Sudan, Lebanon, Syria, Indonesia, and Europe. They will explain how the Khilafah holds credible and practical solutions to the multitude of political, economic and social problems afflicting women in their lands as well as highlight the growing support amongst Muslim women for Islamic governance in the Muslim world.
The conference will be live-streamed globally and will also include a vibrant exhibition illustrating what Khilafah means and the status of women under Islam.
Over the past few weeks, the women of Hizb ut-Tahrir – from the Middle East to Russia, Europe to Africa, Pakistan to Indonesia, Turkey to Australia – have been engaging in an active, coordinated global campaign consisting of mass distribution of flyers, the organization of numerous seminars and street stalls, engagement with media, as well as pursuing a dynamic and extensive internet and social media campaign to explain why they believe the Khilafah system is one that will give justice to women of the Muslim world from decades of oppression and be a true model for securing the rights of women globally.
Dr. Nazreen Nawaz, Central Media Representative, Hizb ut-Tahrir commented, “This unprecedented event that will gather women from across the world to express their overwhelming desire to be governed by the Khilafah will dismantle the popular Western myths that Muslim women reject Islamic rule”
“The Arab uprisings have generated a historical opportunity to work hard and seriously create for real change in the Arab and Muslim world and shape a future of dignity and prosperity for all – male and female. However, bringing real improvement to the lives of the region’s women requires much more than fighting for a few token seats in new parliaments, symbolic positions in governments, or a few empty rights in new constitutions. When expectations for change have been raised so high, such crumbs can surely no longer be acceptable. Creating a real revolution in women’s wellbeing requires a radically new political vision that embodies a comprehensive political and economic plan for change as well as a step-by-step guide of how to secure the dignity and political, economic, educational and legal rights of women. It is the Khilafah that offers this.”
“A future of dignity and prosperity cannot be built by adopting the tried and tested secular, liberal, democratic system that has failed to solve the epidemic levels of violence, sexual harassment and rape affecting women within Western secular liberal societies, nor address the abject poverty, widespread illiteracy, sexual exploitation, and unacceptable levels of abuse experienced by millions of women in other secular liberal states across the world.”
