Taji Mustafa: Theresa May brands Muslim Community ‘Extremist’
Theresa May today used the Muslim Community as an election football by branding their core beliefs and values ‘extremist’ to appeal to right-wing voters.
Separate seating for men and women, the Shariah, the establishment of the Caliphate are all core Islamic beliefs which May declared ‘extremist’.
An ‘extremist’ is clearly someone who speaks out against Britain’s failed local and global policies and chooses a different way of life. So much for personal freedom and free speech!
Her speech encourages animosity toward Islamic practice. And admits Britain’s failed to incorporate Muslims – the only way left is to force ‘our superior’ liberal secular belief on Muslims. So much for free choice!
She claimed you can’t separate non-violent from violent extremism, one leads to the other. So some used violence to overcome apartheid, so ending apartheid was wrong?
By her method freedom, democracy and secularism should be outlawed because state sponsored political violence was used to enforce them on Iraq and Afghanistan!
Her claims to these ‘British’ values are farcical – she broke them to protect them. Banning orders to protect free speech; enforce our beliefs to protect free choice; outlaw what people think to protect free thought! It was a speech that would make senator McCarthy proud.
Any sane Muslim or non-Muslim will realise she’s tarnished a whole community with the actions of a handful; her speech will not help but hinder community relations. That in the end, she has branded a whole community and its core beliefs fair game.
Muslims should be commended for standing by Islam and participating in its revival, for sticking to its values despite such vitriol directed at them. And for standing united in such circumstances – they will not be intimidated into silence and submission.
