30 November 2008 – Mujibul Islam, Bangla media representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain, participated in a panel discussion today titled ‘Election 2008: will there be change?’ Also sitting on the panel were M. A. Gani – General Secretary Awami League Europe, Shamsul Alom Liton – News and Current Affairs Director BTV, and Joglul Hussain – Bangladesh Workers Party.
Mujibul Islam in his speech said that the current military backed caretaker government came to power with the aim to reform the corrupt political culture; they pushed for reform within the political parties and arrested many high profile politicians. However, most of them have been released to participate in the election. And it is the same political parties and politicians who were the cause of 1/11 that are returning to create more corruption and chaos for the country. The past two years were nothing but a pointless exercise which gave false hope to the people of Bangladesh.
Mujibul Islam argued that Bangladesh needs to discard the old corrupt politics and politicians, and bring in new politics. A new politics that is not based on personalities but rather based on the vital issues facing Bangladesh; a new politics which is not based on benefit and profits; a new politics that will not deliver the country as a market for foreign companies, but will put forward a vision for industrialisation by utilising the energy assets, human resource and the strong agricultural base of the country; a new politics that will not allow the U.S., UK or India to see Bangladesh as a base for their interests in South Asia.
Mujibul Islam said that this new politics can only be delivered by Islam represented by the Khilafah system. A system where fair elections will be held and a Khalifah would be appointed by the public who will be accountable to both the people and Allah (swt) in fulfilling his responsibilities. He stated that Hizb ut-Tahrir is working for such a system and has put forward a manifesto to address the country’s problems and solutions from Islam. Mujibul Islam concluded by calling the people to create this demand in Bangladesh and remove the current corrupt system of governance.
