5 things Muslim rulers can do to help the Rohingya right now:
1. Threaten Myanmar with an invasion or blockade
Myanmar has struggled with insurgencies for decades – it simply would not be able to face a conventional force.
2. Close Myanmar embassies and expel their ambassadors
This gives a strong, unified signal that it is unacceptable to slaughter Muslims – we by no means want ties with a murdering state.
3. Sever all ties with Myanmar
Expelling a diplomat, or even an ambassador, is not the same as severing diplomatic relations – a much more dramatic step.
In 2015, the Myanmar government ordered 16 JF-17 fighter jets worth 35 million dollars each from Pakistan.
The Myanmar military was bombing civilian targets, had a plan to launch offensives against ethnic armies and was reinforcing their forces.
The Myanmar Army is now in “advanced negotiations” with Pakistan to license -build third-generation JF-17 fighter jets.
This must cease immediately as it contributes to aiding the oppressor.
4. Deploy troops on the ground
The Muslims being massacred are in the Rakhine state – the closest part of Burma to Bangladesh. Muslim rulers could easily state they are putting forces in to protect the Ummah.
5. Open the borders to the Rohingya
Some 370,000 Rohingya are now said to have fled violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state since 25th August 2017.
Under the orders of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Hasina, Bangladeshi border guards say troops fired mortars and machine guns at Rohingya civilians trying to escape the bloodshed.
The nation-state model normalises horrific acts against fleeing, persecuted refugees.
Muslim rulers must accommodate all their brothers and sisters in need.
Their lack of action only demonstrates the need to replace them with a sincere leader who fears his accountability to Allah (swt).
One who will implement the Shari’ah and liberate our Ummah once again.
